Wire Spheres
Featured here are several striking examples of innovative lamp structures that blur the line between art and functionality. One is a fabric-covered wire dome suspended on pulleys, which offers an intriguing balance of form and engineering, its 28-inch diameter gracefully rising and falling with a counterweight.
In another, the transformation of a lamp is captured from day to night, where brass shim stock sheets complement the wire frame, casting a warm, inviting glow. Each piece, with its 28-inch diameter, creates a unique narrative through both their design and light play.
These wire spheres offer excellent opportunities to create Christmas lights or special event lights as shown below.
Wire spheres are created using 1/8″ diameter spring wire formed into three sizes of hoops. The ends of these hoops are fitted with spring clips to create a perfect circle. The hoops are then wire bound together using jigs.
Wire Domes
Using 6″ grid wire mesh used in concrete slab construction, John has created a way to pull sections of it through a hoop with a sphere to form a wire dome (see video here). These can serve in the garden as supports for plants or flowers that tend to fall over as they mature. In winter, these domes simply act as garden art. Another use for them is a deer deterrent if a few of them encircle a new plant that the deer would otherwise nibble on or rub on during fall rutting season. These are about 30″ in diameter and 30″ tall.
Laundry Basket
Most laundry baskets have two handles, making it difficult to open doors without having to set the basket down beforehand. This one has but one handle and is made of galvanized wire mesh. Length: 23″. Width: 20″. Height: 18″.
